NOTE: In January 2016 Obagi advised us that their products are NOT vegan, and that “Unless mandated by the FDA for drug safety purposes, Obagi does not test its products on animals. Non-prescription Obagi products have not been tested on animals.” We are leaving this article up so that those who are looking for this information can find it.]

Obagi skin care products are manufactured by Obagi Medical Products.  Headquartered in Long Beach, CA, Obagi Skin Care has been formulating “topical anesthetic and therapeutic clinically-proven skin care systems in the physician-dispense market” since 1988.  Formerly called Obagi Nu-Derm, Obagi Medical Products, Inc. has distribution partners in 47 countries across Europe, Central America, South America, Asia, the Middle East and North America.  Obagi has been featured in Allure Magazine and on MSNBC.

Obagi skin care products address issues such as premature aging, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, acne, photodamage, rosacea and fine lines and wrinkles.  Obagi sells a number of products that address these issues, but some of the newest Obagi systems include “Obagi-C Rx System, the first prescription-strength Vitamin C and hydroquinone system, the Condition & Enhance System, developed to enhance the results of physician delivered surgical and non-surgical procedures and the ELASTIderm family of products – a one of a kind treatment developed to restore skin elasticity and collagen production, and reduce fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and décolletage.”

Obagi’s other newest systems include CLENZIderm M.D Acne Therapeutic Systems that help to treat and prevent acne “at its root”, and the Rosaclear System, “developed specifically for the treatment and prevention of the signs and symptoms of rosacea”.  Obagi also features the Nu-Derm system, which addresses the signs of photodamage and Pro-C serums.  Obagi professional Pro-C serums prevent premature signs of aging, protect against future damage, stimulate collagen production and lighten and brighten skin for even tone.

Obagi products are not tested on animals.  They are cruelty free and safe for vegans and vegetarians.  While Obagi products may be safe for anyone following a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle (in general), a few products might not be suitable for individuals with sensitivities to certain ingredients, such as hydroquinone.

Overall, Obagi Skin Care products feature a number of all natural and cruelty free ingredients that are typically safe for all skin types and lifestyles.  Just a few Obagi ingredients include purified water, aloe, sage leaf extract, borago officinalis extract calendula officinalis flower extract, Vitamin C, kalaya oil, safflower oil, rosemary, kola nitida extract and vegetable oil.

Where to Purchase Obagi Skin Care

According to the official Obagi website, because Obagi Systems and products contain prescription-strength formulations, the systems are only available through physicians, primarily dermatologists, plastic surgeons, medical spas and other skin care and medical specialists.

I have read on another site that Obagi does test on animals. Can you verify any recent developments? My doctor has prescribed Obagi, but I want to verify that it is indeed not tested on animals & contains no animal ingredients. Thank you.

I would like to know the answer to this as well. I tried to find out on Obagi’s website but couldn’t find anything. So Vegetarian Beauty Products, where did you get your information that says they don’t test on animals?

Kathy and Pamela, did you ever get an answer to your questions?
I’d like to use Obagi but still don’t know for sure if it is cruelty-free!

Hi, I am having the same problem finding out for sure if Obagi is 100% cruelty free. I don’t see on their website they are cruelty free. I would also like to know if they sell in China which does require animal testing.
