About Origins
Launched in 1990, Origins is the first “‘major skin care company to embrace the needs of the consumer interested in high-performance natural skin care that is powered by nature and proven by science”. According to the Origins official website (www.origins.com), Origins is also the first prestige cosmetic brand to develop earth and animal friendly practices and packaging.
Origins commitment to the environment has been well-received by vegans, vegetarians and other individuals that follow a cruelty-free lifestyle. The company manufactures products using a combination of renewable resources, wind energy and earth-friendly practices. Origins also uses recycled materials wherever possible, and it is recognized as one of the top 20 Retail partners by the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership. EPA recognition came as a result of the company purchasing of 100 percent green power.
All together, Origins purchases have amounted to more than 8 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually. In addition, since July 2007 Origins has planted the equivalent of 2,800 acres of pine forest.
Origins is also involved in efforts to raise money for charities such as the Breast Cancer Research Foundation ($360,000 in donations so far), it has partnered with Global ReLeaf and it supports the Prince’s Rainforests Project (PRP).
Origins uses only the “most potent, most efficacious plants, herbs, organic ingredients and 100% essential oils available”. Origins takes credit for discovering “age-defying, free-radical neutralizing” Silver-needle White Tea in the hills of Fujian China, “skin-firming” Rhodiola rosea in the mountains of Siberia and “health-promoting” Hypsizygus ulmarius mushrooms cultivated in the Pacific Northwest. Silver-needle is the basis for Origins’ A Perfect World skincare collection, and Rhodiola is used in the company’s anti-aging treatment line called Youthtopia. Hypsizygus ulmarius mushrooms are used in Origins Dr. Weil for Origins treatments.
In addition to the products mentioned at the beginning of this article, Origins also sells body smoothers, scrubs and whipped body cream, as well as a full line of makeup. Ginger essence fragrances are available, along with mint shampoos, conditioners and rinses. For men, Origins carries shave cream, soothing shave lotion, body wash and pre-shave oil.
