The good news is that we found an eyelash curler that is even better than Tarte's. Continue reading [...]

Maureen Kelly Sells Formerly Cruelty-Free Cosmetic Company Tarte, to Non-Cruelty-Free Kose, Insults Consumers with Smoke and Mirrors

Tarte vegetarian and cruelty-free cosmetics is no longer cruelty-free after selling out to Kose Cosmetics. Hi, all of you cruelty-free fashionistas, Jess here. Tarte, one of our favorite cosmetic brands to review, has sold out to a bigger company, Kose comsetics, who still tests on animals. They then had the nerve to insult its consumers by trying to distance themselves from their new parent company by saying that Tarte will remain cruelty-free, as if consumers can't figure out that, any dollars that go to Tarte, will ultimately end up in the hands of animal-testing Kose. We all know that makeup brushes are often made with animal fur, and so we have to be diligent to make sure that the brushes we buy are made of synthetic materials. When we say we scour the Internet for vegetarian and cruelty-free beauty products, we mean it. We spend hours looking for the perfect company to feature. Why does it take so long? Well for starters, you’d be surprised how many companies don’t make the cut. It happens daily: we find a new company that sounds promising, start checking out their products, and then find some infraction that means we have to send them packing. The worst part is, many of these issues are because of mere website wording, or lack thereof. Continue reading [...]

Kokokahn Vegan and Cruelty-free Beauty Products

The journey to creating Kokokahn vegan and cruelty-free beauty products began with founder Tracy Dalrymple's time in Japan. Traci was introduced to natural healing and wellness through the use of essential oils. From there, Salrymple began studying about essential oils and plants for aromatherapy and holistic healing. It wasn't long before she traveled to Bali to learn even more about aromatherapy, and that was where she found the inspiration for the name of her company, Kokokahn. Ask Aveda to Stop Supporting Cruelty to Roosters by the Feather Hair Extensions Industry

We were dismayed when the feather hair extension craze began. While we knew that the way that the feathers were harvested would likely fly under the radar for awhile, we also knew that it wouldn’t be long until the truth finally started to circulate. Many people mistakenly believe that the feathers fall naturally off of the bird, but sadly, this is just not true. Continue reading [...]

L’Oreal: Lead in Lipstick, Animal Testing and Other Atrocities

Petal Fresh Organics: Cruelty-Free and Vegan Beauty Products, or Not?

We happened upon Petal Fresh Organics vegan and cruelty-free beauty products by accident. We were at a discount store and were shocked to see a shampoo and conditioner set donning the PETA “cruelty free and vegan” logo. We were also admittedly slightly suspicious over its $3.99/bottle price tag. While we love our organic beauty products, the common downside is that they are often pricier since the ingredients are high quality and made in smaller batches. Continue reading [...]

Five Natural Beauty Product Companies that are Owned by Big Corporations Who are not Cruelty Free or Environmentally Ethical

Did you know that it is not uncommon for natural beauty product companies to be owned by big corporations who are not cruelty free or environmentally ethical? According to the Nutrition Business Journal, consumers in the US spent over $8 billion on natural and organic personal care products in 2010, including vegan, cruelty-free beauty products. This constitutes a 6% increase in sales over the year before. Needless to say, large corporations have been sitting up and taking note of the fact that consumers are trending towards healthier and organic beauty products, and are quickly snapping up small natural beauty product companies to stake their claim in a portion of these profits. Continue reading [...]

Elemental Herbs Vegetarian and Cruelty-Free Beauty Products

Half of being beautiful, if not more, is being healthy. Vegetarian and cruelty-free beauty products like cosmetics and perfume can only take you so far; having healthy and beautiful skin and hair is just as important, if not more so. Before too long she began making her own body care items and was in demand by friends and family for the goods. Continue reading [...]

What Exactly Are Those Products in Non-Vegan Beauty Products, and Why Are They so Bad?

Every week we bring you a hand full of beauty companies who are vegan and cruelty-free, and most of these companies proudly proclaim the fact that they are free of the same harsh ingredients that are found in mainstream cosmetics. But what are these ingredients? They have such long, confusing names that do sound scary, but are they as bad as they sound? Is it an advantage to use beauty products that are free of these chemicals? Continue reading [...]

Manic Panic Vegan and Cruelty Free Hair Dye

Manic Panic vegan and cruelty-free hair dye is an iconic product that dominated the New York punk scene long before it became a regular staple at the likes of Hot Topic, Spencer’s Gifts and Sally’s Beauty Supply. In 1977, Bronx-born sisters Tish and Snooky opened their punk-style boutique in New York City. While the store initially had a cult-following by the first generation punk scene, by the 1990s it was hitting the mainstream fashion scene. Continue reading [...]

Elegant Minerals Cruelty-free, Vegan Theatrical Costume Makeup

When seeking out cruelty-free, vegan makeup, many wouldn’t even think of theatrical or costume makeup. It is certainly not the type of makeup that most need to wear on a regular basis, but safe costume makeup is important to consider because most theatrical cosmetics contain damaging, harsh ingredients that are known to be widely tested on animals. Lead and parabens are among the nasty chemicals commonly found in stage makeup that cause rashes, breakouts, redness and dry, itchy skin. Continue reading [...]

Howard’s Vegan, Cruelty-Free Soap

We especially love supporting small businesses that create cruelty-free, vegan beauty products. While there are many cruelty-free, vegan beauty companies that have successfully transitioned from small company, to large, mass-distributed, operations, we often see it go bad. The Body Shop proved as much when they decided to sell themselves to infamous animal-testing company, L’Oreal. Continue reading [...]

Vegetarian and Vegan Beauty Product Certifications

There are plenty of products out there that bear different certifications from varying certifying agencies, but what does all of this mean? Like the terms “vegetarian” and “vegan,” it is largely open to interpretation and personal standards. That is why, ultimately, it is up to you as the consumer to empower yourself with the knowledge of the different ingredients commonly used in beauty products, and their implications in the world of animal welfare. Where one person does not consider honey to be an animal byproduct, someone else does and would never use it. Continue reading [...]

What Lanolin is and Why it is Not a Cruelty-Free Ingredient

We were quite surprised recently when we found that several companies who reported being both cruelty-free and vegan not only had products containing lanolin, but did not realize the implications of supporting the wool industry. One company we spoke with directly even stated that lanolin was not an animal-derived product. While we understand that the area of animal welfare is always a learning process, this illustrates how important it is to closely read the ingredients list of products you use, despite the claims made by the company. Continue reading [...]

What Vivisection Is and Its Use in the Cosmetic and Beauty Products Industry

Vivisection is a term that make many shudder, even if they do not know what it means. Vivisection is technically defined as procedures, such as surgical (minor and major) that are performed on living beings, for the purpose of performing experiments. While vivisection, or animal testing, is conducted for many purposes, such as medical procedures and pharmaceuticals, we will be focusing on the use of animal testing in personal care items, such as cosmetics, hygiene products and other general beauty products. Continue reading [...]

All About the Leaping Bunny Program

As the demand for cruelty-free products became more prevalent, there came an emerging need to create a consistent set of standards by which to measure if a product was in fact truly cruelty free (and we hasten to add that "cruelty free" does not necessarily mean vegan, or even vegetarian, but more on that later). In response to this need for organized standards, eight national animal welfare groups formed an alliance: the American Anti-Vivisection Society, the Animal Alliance of Canada, Beauty Without Cruelty, the Doris Day Animal League, the Humane Society of Canada, the Humane Society of the United States, the MSPCA Center for Laboratory Animal Welfare and the New England Ant-Vivisection Society. Continue reading [...]

All About Cruelty-free, Vegan and Vegetarian Certifications: What They Mean, and What They Don’t Mean

We write a lot about cruelty-free, vegan and vegetarian certifications when reviewing different beauty products. There are certainly plenty of certifying agencies out there, each one using different factors in determining who gets certified by them, and who doesn’t. While there are many certifying agencies that are well-known both internationally, and nationally, such as the Leaping Bunny program, and PETA’s well known list of cruelty-free companies, each one has standards that vary in strictness. Continue reading [...]

GlamNatural Cruelty-Free, Gluten Free and Vegan Makeup

It is National Celiac Awareness Month, so we thought we’d celebrate it by featuring a cruelty-free, vegan makeup that is also gluten free. It stands to reason that those who are intolerant to ingested gluten also don’t want to have gluten on their bodies, but gluten is found as an ingredient in many commercial makeup lines. Even the cleanest, organic makeup can cause skin issues to someone with gluten intolerance if the makeup contains gluten ingredients! Continue reading [...]

Herban Cowboy: Vegan, Cruelty-Free Grooming Products for Men

We thought we’d take an opportunity to review some men’s products since we tend to focus so much on products that are mainly intended for women. As tough as vegan, cruelty-free products can be to find for women, they are even tougher to find for men. We were excited to find out about the Herban Cowboy company, devoted to vegan, cruelty-free products for men. Founders Luke and Lisa started the Herban Cowboy on just a few thousand dollars, working out of their log cabin on a dirt road. The entire line was created in their kitchen, with Luke and Lisa both bottling the products by hand. Continue reading [...]

Pirouette Professional Cruelty-Free, Vegan Makeup Brushes

We absolutely love it when we come across vegan, cruelty-free makeup brushes. We are often surprised when we find companies that boast about their vegan cosmetics, but then sell makeup brushes that contain animal fur. Many people believe that the fur is simply cut off of the animal, but in many cases it is fur that is considered too poor quality for clothing. In cases when it is simply trimmed off of the animal, such as horse hair tools, there is no reliable way of knowing the life that the animals lead. Continue reading [...]
