8 Great Vegan Makeup Primers

Many of us at Vegetarian Beauty Products are makeup enthusiasts, but our knowledge didn’t come all at once. It has been built up through experimentation and failed trial and error, and we’re still learning new things all the time. But one thing we do know is that a good primer can make the difference between great makeup and bad makeup.

What is a makeup primer?

A makeup primer helps smooth out your skin and shrink your pores before you apply foundation. It also helps your foundation last longer, so you can go all day without reapplying. Silica, a common ingredient in primers, helps to reduce shine, while retinyl palmitate reduces flaking, and propylene glycol acts as a moisturizer. Good primers are non-irritating and spread smoothly onto your skin. Even if you have great skin, primers can be helpful for making your blush or foundation last all day. They should be applied after your moisturizer and before your foundation. Here are some of the best vegan primers on the market.

Vegan foundation primers

e.l.f.’s Illuminating Primer Mist

e.l.f. is a completely cruelty-free, with many vegan products. If you’re looking for an economical primer, this could be the product for you! At only $8 per bottle, this primer can be easily sprayed onto your face before you begin your makeup.

Too Faced’s Primed and Poreless Primer

Too Faced is a cruelty-free brand, and this product is vegan. At $30 a bottle, it’s on the pricier end, but this product works well enough to be worth it. They also offer a $15 travel-sized option.

Elizabeth Mott’s Thank Me Later (Face Primer)

Elizabeth Mott is cruelty free, and this product is vegan. It’s also $30 per container, but this primer comes with a free mini eye-primer, which is a great perk. The primer glides on smoothly, and is great for those with oily skin.

Milani Cosmetics’ Prime Perfection Hydrating + Pore-Minimizing Face Primer

Milani Cosmetics is PETA-certified cruelty-free, and many of their products are also vegan (Including this one). It’s only $10/container, so this is another great option for makeup on a budget. This primer works well with all skin types.

Tarte Cosmetics’ Poreless Mattifying Primer

This primer is vegan, and Tarte Cosmetics is completely cruelty free. It’s waterproof and can be used alone as a treatment for oily skin. You can find this product for $32 online, or in your local Sephora or Ulta.

Jane Irendale’s Facial Primer and Brightener

Jane Irendale is a certified cruelty-free brand, and they specifically list every product that isn’t vegan friendly. This one is, luckily for us. It works as both a primer and a brightener, bringing out the best in your skin in one step. It’s more expensive, at $48 per container, but we think this one is worth it.

Arbonne’s Makeup Primer

Arbonne is a PETA-endorsed vegan and cruelty-free brand. They offer a primer for sensitive skin that glides on smoothly and prepares your skin for the makeup that will follow. This product is $33 dollars per bottle.

All of these products are great for your skin, and for animals. They also leave out harmful irritants that are sometimes found in primers. If you know about any other great primers, let us know in the comments!
